Driving in Quebec with an M2

What is the status of driving over there with an M2. I've heard that
the police don't respect the M2?
What are the facts?

I've done it, but wasn't stopped. When I got my learners G, I drove
across Canada with my Dad in the passenger seat. It hadn't occurred to
me that this would be an issue. Mind you, that was a *lot* of years ago.

But then again, with the Quebec cops ticketing for expired stickers, it
wouldn't surprise me.
